The Witness Tree Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) is located on the Susquehanna River, south of Harrisburg, in Columbia, Pennsylvania. The chapter was formed on December 11, 1897, by the first Pennsylvania woman to join the newly formed Daughters of the American Revolution, Miss Lillian Slaymaker Evans.
Chapter meetings are on the second Tuesday of the month from September to June. Guests are always welcome to attend chapter meetings.
We are a vital part of the community and will celebrate our 125th anniversary in 2021. The women of this chapter are warm, friendly, and interesting. Some of us work full-time, some of us are raising families, and some of us are retired. We still find time to be involved with the DAR. Throughout life competing priorities may limit a member’s involvement for periods of time. We encourage our members to stay connected to our chapter during these times and then come back as time allows – and of course, always enjoy the friendships made along the way.
Our members are neighbors, leaders, mothers, daughters, civic leaders, and fellow volunteers. In other words, Daughters are active in all walks of life. They care about their country, city, town, the environment, schools, the active-duty military and veterans, and numerous community projects. DAR is a service organization. Members have proven their direct lineage to Patriot ancestors who contributed to securing the freedom of this country, whether through active military service or service in some other capacity on the American side during the Revolutionary War. We focus on continued service to our community and our country as a result of that honor. We look to the future, especially in our endeavors to prepare our young people to respect this country through contests challenging them to consider the past with an eye to the future. We're ready to help prospective members research and complete the DAR Application. |
Our mission is to promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism in our service to God, Home, and Country.

Membership in the DAR
Would you like to be a member of a service organization and have a Patriot ancestor who made our American independence possible? Add to this, a heritage of service in historic preservation, promotion of education, and encouragement of patriotism, and you have Today's DAR.
Women aged eighteen and older who come from diverse backgrounds and are proud to play an active role in their communities while making new friends are today's members of the DAR.
As one member put it, "To learn I could become a part of the DAR changed my life. I've made friendships for a lifetime."
Worldwide, the National Society has more than 3,000 chapters, and over 185,000 members. The Pennsylvania State Society DAR has 94 local chapters throughout the state ready to invite you to a meeting. You are eligible for membership if you can prove lineal descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American independence. Help is available to document that lineage and to fill out the DAR Application. Membership in the NSDAR is an excellent way to honor and preserve the legacy of your Patriot ancestor.
When you become a member, you have the opportunity to contribute to your community through service projects in the areas of historic preservation, education, and patriotism, as well as make lifelong friends.
